There are many reasons to participate in either undergraduate research experiences or internships, but a few particularly compelling reasons are:
These opportunities can help you narrow down what you might want to do and rule out things you don’t want to do as a career. Taking these opportunities early and often is a great way to figure out future career plans.
You can learn skills (lab techniques, software, data analysis methods, instrumentation) that maybe very useful in a future career that you won’t have the opportunity to learn in a lab-based course.
These opportunities look great on a resume or curriculum vitae when you get ready to apply for professional or graduate programs or your first job post graduation.
