Equilibria of Other Reactions Classes

Chapter 15

Solubility is the extent to which a chemical substance is able to dissolve in a solvent. Think about when you are mixing a drink powder into water.

Are Dissociation and Solubility Related (2:39)

What is conceptually happening in solubility? The individual ions are being surrounded by water or solvent (by ion-dipole interaction)

Solubility Vocabulary

solubility: maximum concentration of solute dissolved in a solvent at equilibrium. When we are above solubility the substance won’t dissolve and it will exist as in its solid form

soluble: solution of at least 0.1M that can be prepared at room temperature

insoluble: a saturated solution that has a concentration of less than 0.001M at room temperature

sparingly soluble/ partially soluble: solution in between 0.001M – 0.1M

saturated: maximum amount of solute is dissolved

unsaturated: the amount of solute dissolved is less than the solubility

supersaturated: more solute is dissolved than the solubility at a given temperature

Solubility Chart

There are usually general rules for solubility given on a chart. Familiarizing yourself with periodic trends can aid in understanding the rules of the solubility chart.
